Hamilton's spouse, Eliza, burning all of his letters to her in response to the Pamphlet's publication, the events the Pamphlet describes and then suggesting that Hamilton himself "burns". While Hamilton's admitted affair served to verify rival Jefferson's conviction that he was untrustworthy, it did nothing to alter Washington's opinion of him, who still held him in "very high esteem" and still viewed him because the dominant drive in establishing the federal regulation and government. The legislation isn’¯t quite that easy. In 1797, Hamilton and Monroe challenged one another to a duel over this incident. The duel was averted by the intercession of Aaron Burr.
